ATLANTA — Protesters rallied in Piedmont Park and marched to Liberty Plaza Saturday to voice their opposition against President Trump and Elon Musk.
The protest was in association with the national 50501 Movement which stands for 50 protests , 50 states, one movement. The movement stands to “uphold the Constitution and end executive overreach,” as stated on their website.
“This protest has some real 2020 energy,” said Dan, a Georgia Tech professor. “There's so much going on right now so this one is less focused but I see this as a way to bring people out. We have to get them used to coming to things like this and build some groups with new leaders.”
Building a Coalition
Multiple groups and parties worked together to organize this event, such as the Georgia NAACP, Party of Liberation & Socialism, ACLU, and more. Speakers from these groups spoke on stage in the Liberty Plaza to thousands of onlookers.
“We have to be prepared to put one to two million people in DC next year. We have to think long-term and strategically,” Dan said.
“People are going to find their groups and build coalitions amongst those groups going forward,” Dan said. “This is a 2 year project that will build community and over the next year we will take action in making change.”
Corporate Influence
“We have multiple fascists running the US government in Elon Musk and Donald Trump,” Kelsea Bond said, a candidate running for Atlanta City Council. “Musk was not elected so that can show you the state that our democracy is in right now. For decades we’ve had wealthy, powerful billionaires buy their way into elections and this is the end result. We have to get corporate money out of politics. Corporations and wealthy CEOs are able to hand pick who they want in office.”
“They’re treating the citizens and government like it is a company with these mass layoffs and treating workers like they’re disposable,” Kelsea said. “The very essential workers that are keeping people healthy, safe, and educated are being treated like garbage.”
“The prevalence of capitalism has led to this,” Kelsea said. “Unions have been decimated over the last few decades. You see that as union activity goes down, worker productivity has gone up but worker pay has stayed stagnant. We’re working longer hours, even multiple jobs for less benefits. The wealth gap between regular people and people like Elon Musk is just growing.”
“We need to bring working people back into the democratic process and fight for union rights and democracy,” Kelsea said.
